Getting a Job in the Public Sector

The best part of working in the public sector are the benefits. The bigger the city the better the health benefits. The pay is also reasonably high as are the retirement benefits. Even though the stimulus package will increase the public sector somewhat, it will not increase as before, as seen by recent employment growth by sector.

Most of the jobs in the public sector require a civil service examination followed by a waiting list depending on how high you and how many opening are anticipated. In reality the only growth in the public sector is in the health and education industry. The health industry, though in limbo now because of the proposed change in health coverage, in the end will bring in more people to be serviced. This along with the aging of the baby-boomers will make the health industry both public and private prime places to seek work.

Education, even though there are cutbacks in places like California, will continue to grow because of the influx of immigrants both legal and illegal. Specifically, Special Education with more and more students being identified with problems, will be a growth sector. When the economy recovers education will grow even more. Other than in Special Education, if you are involved in math or other sciences, obtaining employment in public education will be facilitated. It should be pointed out that you will work harder and receive less benefits than the preceding generation, because of the continued unemployment and the inability of state governments to continue to bestow such generous benefits. Keep in mind teaching will become more difficult because of the influx of so many non-English students along with the accountability for teaching these students passed down to the bottom of the hierarchy, the teachers. Teaching will become a less secure job than before.

Other than in education and nursing keep your day job until you are called in after passing the civil service examinations and any other examinations you will have to take. I am speaking of public sector jobs to be obtained primarily in big cities. In smaller cities and towns it will be a lot tougher, with far less opportunities. Even now the growth of education jobs has not kept up to the phenomenal rises of needed positions in the past.

Police and Fire positions will be a bit more difficult to obtain. Here too, the days of lavish pension and retirement benefits are gone forever.
